FreeOrion v0.5.1 has been released.

This is the version of FreeOrion recommended for those who just want to play and enjoy the game. So unless you want to participate in game development or play the latest development version with all the new features (but potentially more bugs), this stable release is for you.

This release cycle has been shorter than the last one - although not by as much as we might have hoped or aimed for. But then, beating two years and eight months (which has been the time it took us to get 0.5 out after 0.4.10) shouldn't be that much of a challenge. Still, we almost came close to two years again. Anyway, here we are, with the next release of FreeOrion, 0.5.1. As always, I want to thank all our supporters, contributors and playtesters for the time and effort they put in to give us another FreeOrion release. The focus this time has been species opinions of empires (which means it starts to matter what the species inhabiting your galaxy think of you), and the annexation of colonies by other means that blunt force (aka invasions). And then, of course, the usual improvements to the various elements and mechanics of the game, and fixing of bugs. See the list of key changes below.

We hope that all these additions and changes will make the game experience richer and more varied. So, go ahead, get the new release, and have a blast!

Get FreeOrion here, for macOS and Windows.

Linux users can either get the snap package we provide on snapcraft.io (please be patient, it may take a few days until the 0.5.1 snap is available), or try to get the new release from the respective package repositories of their distributions (if your distro maintains FreeOrion packages). If you can't use our snap package, and your distro does not maintain FreeOrion packages, Linux users need to build FreeOrion with cmake/make per the instructions here.
