I stand corrected on the older fluff discussions. Hope my interpretations don't sound rude.
Re:maths. It doesn't need to be in the description. It's how I justify them breaking codes without building-sized artificial computers, when they themselves *are* their only building-sized computers.
Re:colonies becoming Old Sly sources. I thought that limiting it to the homeworld only would be too big a nerf--left thinking of how I could justify allowing it on old colonies (by migration for building construction). The description I gave actually favours making them homeworld-only. One other option, if you wish to include old colonies, is to make it dependent on how long the *current* owner has had the planet. I'll leave that up to you. It does make it interesting for the Sly player if another empire expands into his empire all the way close to the HW and then both start to tech up.
Bioluminesence and sound are not mutually exclusive so the history songs--what makes me think they are Slylandro, other than the name--can still be done with both media used by a single species. For it to reverberate through the core, however, requires either that sound be included or perhaps that their planet has a special translucent core. Hmm...I don't think metallic hydrogen will work. Metals in general are out. But we can twist the truth. Diamond? That would allow optical history songs to reverberate with a little bit of lying and handwaving of physics, no different from sound.
Or just keep it as sound.
The reason I used light is for the Old Sly. I want them to have the ability to have many simultaneous conversations without those interfering with each other, hence line of sight.
Edit because I forgot to respond:
I see no picture in the Sly pedia article in-game. (v0.5.0.1 from source) They do have an icon like the other species, top-right.
Let's see...I can see Abaddoni, Banforo, Ugmors, Eaxaw, Hhoh...Laenfa also have a picture at the bottom. I don't see one in the top forum post, though.
