In Civilization 2 (not sure about the other versions), you had periodical "sitreps" with a ranking of the best-to-worse seven Civs on one criteria.
By watching the Wonders, you also could have an estimation on how your civilization fared comparatively to others.
FreeOrion has chosen not to have Wonders, and I'm not contesting a core design choice like that.
But it would be interesting to have another way to have small contests which could help each player have educated guesses about where other players are in their development.
Like "Achievements", things that would provide a small bonus (so as to not make the game a race for achievements, since we don't want Wonders, but to still make those achievements useful) and be publicly displayed to other players via SitRep.
Ideally, these would be a choice : a player not wanting to alert others about his capacities could still choose not to get the Achievements, but it would come at a cost (having to delay his development until another player gets the Achievement, and losing the Achievement bonus).
Possible achievements could be a number of kills, a number of enemy power kill (i.e. adding the total damage done by enemy killed, and providing the achievement at 1000), a number of ships, a number of warships, a number of planets, a total Population, a total Population for a specific Metabolism, being first to build a particular building, whatever.
Possible bonus could be a flat +1 IP/turn provided by the Imperial Palace (or by the PARC, per my other proposal), or specific bonus depending on the Achievement (first player to build an Asteroid Processor gets +1% Structure on all his Asteroid Hulls from now on).
