I've been getting used to snap in the last few days and once I learned how to configure and control it a bit it doesn't seem so invasive and grabby anymore. As a rule I dislike any software that does things automatically (like updates), I'm used to being in complete control of my computer (starting with the Atari 800 in 1982) but I saw that you can decide when and if snap does updates. 4 updates a day was the default, ugh. For now I switched to 1/day but that's probably only temporary.
Searching the selection of snaps I was delighted to see quite a few (unavailable as flatpaks) such as powwow and powtty (MUD clients).
