Endosymbiotics are actually the cheapest troop ship in terms of PP/troop. Also I'm not sure why you believe robotics are better? I just compared with double diamond armour and double plasma guns - the endosymbiotic is cheaper, faster, has more fuel range and almost reaches the same structure at full growth (the endo is 448 at full growth and the robotic 488). I don't believe they are worth going out of your way to research, but they certainly aren't a terrible hull.
Edit: Ok technically the small asteroid hull is cheaper/troop, but its also speed 60
